Getting started

We’ve started the search for our permanent homestead in southern Wisconsin.  Since we’ve been having some difficulties with our stock fund guys who are trying to limit the amount of cash we can get to purchase a place, we may have to go with a “blank slate,” a property without anything built on it.  Granted, we can get a lot more land for WAY less money, but we’ll have to spend the money later to build.  The upside–we can build things exactly as we need them.  I guess it’s a trade-off.

In the meantime, I’m doing my homework, trying to teach myself about growing food in raised beds, raising dairy goats, butchering livestock, keeping a cow (or 2), trading and bartering, building things for myself rather than buying them, and everything else I can think of.  Our half-dozen “older” hens (4 of them in their 4th year and the others in their 2nd) are being very generous this summer–we’re averaging 5 eggs a day, but I think that our “surprise rooster” is going to head off to “freezer camp” soon.  He’s getting pretty bad-tempered, but I bet he’ll make great soup!

Anyway, the plan as of right now is to head out to Wisconsin sometime within the next couple of weeks to both visit with the in-laws and to check out a few of the properties i’ve found so far.  Maybe something will turn up.
